Put the fixed bookings on your calendar
Arrive the day before, use four complete sightseeing days and leave the following morning: five nights at the same Wangfujing-area hotel. Arrival evening is for check-in and a nearby meal; departure morning belongs to the issued station or flight.
Book the Palace before arranging the four days
Write your four actual sightseeing dates and weekdays. For each feasible Palace date, count back seven calendar days and set the release reminder for 20:00 Beijing time, UTC+8. Prepare the booking account and each traveller’s passport details before release. The released calendar and issued order must show the intended visit date.
- Exclude ordinary Mondays from Palace target dates; use a holiday exception only when the museum’s notice confirms it for your date.
- A date outside the sales window is not sold out. Check again at its actual release time.
- Keep one confirmed Palace day and save its date, session, passport details and order number offline before fixing the other days.
Place Monday on the Wall or Summer Palace day
This day-by-day plan is a default sequence, not a fixed calendar. Palace admission and Temple’s inner sights normally exclude Monday. Use these swaps when Monday falls inside your four days, then reconcile them with the Palace ticket you actually secured.
- Monday is Day 1: Wall → Palace → Temple → Summer Palace.
- Monday is Day 2: Palace → Wall → Temple → Summer Palace.
- Monday is Day 3: Palace → Temple → Wall → Summer Palace.
- Monday is Day 4: Palace → Temple → Summer Palace → Wall.
- If the Wall is confirmed for another day, keep that order and put Summer Palace’s open grounds and Long Corridor on Monday; check each indoor hall before adding it. Place the Temple on a remaining core-open day. Check temporary park and museum notices for your actual dates.
If the Palace ticket is for a different day
Keep the confirmed Palace date. Assign a separate confirmed return-transfer day to Mutianyu, put the Temple on a remaining non-Monday day, and use Summer Palace for the remaining day, using open grounds and checking indoor-hall closures if it is Monday. Move a booking only through its official change or refund route; moving a line in this plan does not change an issued ticket.
- With no Palace ticket, replace that interior visit with a shorter central-city block: your hotel → a confirmed Jingshan or Beihai ticket/window → a nearby meal → hotel. Skip the Jingshan climb for the shorter version.
- If the National Museum’s collections interest you more, use it as the replacement only after obtaining its own timed reservation; carry the booked original passport to the North Gate.
- If no replacement admission is confirmed, keep the block for rest and a short walk near the hotel. Avoid travelling between uncertain gates.
Wall choice: this sample uses an English Mutianyu road return. Badaling by rail is a different complete day when return seats are available; replace the whole Wall block.
Day 1: Palace Museum
07:15–14:30 · Palace only
Use this block on the museum-open day printed on your issued Palace reservation. The timing assumes morning admission; change the start for a confirmed afternoon session.
- 07:15 planning departure with original passport, water and offline confirmation.
- Reach the Donghuamen side approach, then follow East Tongzi River Road to Meridian Gate. If directed west, the published alternative is Xihuamen → West Tongzi River Road → Meridian Gate. Donghuamen and Xihuamen are approach points, not Palace admission gates.
- 08:30–12:30 planning band for the main Palace route, with seated pauses and fewer side halls if needed. Use the actual booked admission window.
- Leave through the currently signed visitor exit, take a seated lunch and use the legal taxi pickup shown on the live map.
- Return to the hotel by about 14:30. No Square detour is needed to make this Palace visit work.
- Transfer and recovery allowance:
- Budget 75 minutes from the 07:15 hotel departure to the 08:30 visit band, including the approach and entry queue; seated lunch and the hotel return occupy the remaining two hours. This is an editorial block, not a timed vehicle journey.
- Book / carry:
- Palace admission for the actual visit date: set a reminder for 20:00 Beijing time seven calendar days before it. Use a confirmed museum-open day.
- Shorter version:
- Keep one Palace route; omit the Jingshan hill climb and a second ticketed sight.
Day 2: Mutianyu
06:45–16:30 or later · Mutianyu on the English bus
Choose MuBus’s Round-Trip Bus with Entry Ticket, English 08:00 departure. Its product uses Dongzhimen Exit C and includes scenic admission plus the internal shuttle. The cable car is extra; lunch is a separate package option. The Chinese B1/CNY80 product has different inclusions.
- 06:45 planning departure from the hotel; reach Dongzhimen Exit C early enough for the operator’s confirmed check-in.
- 08:00 advertised departure. The operator’s example reaches Mutianyu about 10:00; road delays can change this.
- Use the included scenic shuttle, then the enclosed cable car to Tower 14. Add Tower 15 only if the uneven ground and steps are manageable, then return the same way.
- Leave the Wall with enough time for cable-car and shuttle queues. For the advertised 15:00 return bus, start the final descent by 13:45 as a planning buffer; the guide’s actual meeting instruction controls.
- The advertised city arrival is around 16:30, not a deadline you can book another activity against. Keep the evening empty.
- If the cable car is suspended or the short Wall route is beyond your limit, stay at the visitor area or move the trip. Do not replace the cable-car plan with a steep stair climb.
- Transfer and recovery allowance:
- The 06:45 start gives 75 minutes for the hotel-to-Dongzhimen transfer and operator check-in. Use the 08:00 bus’s published two-hour outward block; the 16:30 city arrival still leaves the hotel leg. Keep the same hotel night.
- Book / carry:
- Confirm the dated English round-trip-and-entry product and meeting instructions; the cable car is extra.
- Shorter version:
- Turn back at Tower 14 if the uneven route is too much; omit Towers 19–20.
Open the entrance, route and return detail →
Cost to carry into your budget: the English adult bus/admission/shuttle and enclosed cable-car return total CNY 320 at the operator’s regular quoted rates; local hotel transfers and food are extra. See inclusions and the calculated day budget →
Day 3: Temple of Heaven
Temple of Heaven, lunch and recovery; Square only if still feasible
The Temple’s inner sights are normally open Tuesday–Sunday. Buy the combined ticket if you want the Hall of Prayer, Echo Wall and Circular Mound; park-only entry is different. Same-day purchase depends on capacity.
- 07:30 planning departure by taxi to Temple East Gate / 天坛东门.
- Allow roughly 08:00–11:00 for this Temple block, including time for a seated break. Confirm the open paths, intended exit and lawful pickup before continuing to the southern sights.
- Continue to Echo Wall and Circular Mound only if the remaining walk and return fit. Otherwise turn back earlier and leave by a workable open gate.
- After lunch, return to the hotel by default. Enter Tiananmen Square only if you independently choose it, have a confirmed separate reservation or currently confirmed eligible-booking exception for the exact date, session and entrance, and still have capacity for the security queue and walk.
- Drop the Square if its extra walk or security queue exceeds the limit. A roadside view or unconfirmed exception is not admission.
- Transfer and recovery allowance:
- The sample gives 30 minutes from the 07:30 hotel departure to the park area, with the 08:00–11:00 visit block including entry and pauses. Allow an additional hour for seated lunch and 30–60 minutes for the hotel return; traffic can require an earlier start or shorter visit.
- Book / carry:
- Choose the combined ticket for the three inner sights and a day when they are open. Only if adding the Square, secure its own reservation or confirm an eligible-booking exception for the exact date, session and entrance.
- Shorter version:
- Shorten before the southern sights if needed; return to the hotel after lunch by default.
Day 4: Summer Palace
07:30–14:30 · Summer Palace and recovery afternoon
Beijing 12345 confirms staff-assisted passport ticket purchase at an entrance window if your foreign number fails online. On an ordinary Monday, use the open grounds and Long Corridor; check each indoor hall before adding it. Bring the same original passport.
- 07:30 planning departure; aim for the staffed East Palace Gate / 颐和园东宫门 around 08:30, allowing extra time for ticketing.
- After East Palace Gate entry, pass through the grounds around Renshou and Leshou halls, entering only where open, then use the east beginning of the Long Corridor. Ask park staff about thresholds, distance and the nearest seat. Turn back there or sooner when the seated-break or pain stop line requires it.
- Do not climb Longevity Hill or circle Kunming Lake. Take a seated pause before continuing along the corridor.
- Return along the same approach to East Palace Gate and use the pre-confirmed lawful road pickup near that gate. Do not continue to the Marble Boat or North Ruyi Gate for this worked mobility limit. If an entrance, path or pickup arrangement changes, shorten or cancel the park block rather than improvise a longer exit.
- If you tire earlier, turn back toward the entry instead of completing the loop. Have lunch and return to the hotel by roughly 14:30.
- Transfer and recovery allowance:
- The 07:30–08:30 hour is the planning allowance for the hotel-to-East-Palace-Gate journey and approach. The 08:30–14:30 block includes ticketing, the short out-and-back, seated lunch and return. Protect that afternoon’s recovery rather than adding another sight.
- Book / carry:
- Bring the original passport and use a staffed entrance window if the online foreign-number route fails; choose the ticket for the spaces you intend to enter.
- Shorter version:
- Omit Longevity Hill, the Marble Boat extension and a full lake circuit; keep the afternoon for recovery.
If you have less time, more time or a different limit
If you separately choose Tiananmen Square
For a dedicated Square visit, the newer authority notice describes real-name booking 1–7 days ahead for a specific date, session and entrance. An earlier rule recognises certain eligible same-day attraction bookings. Reserve the Square separately when possible, or obtain authority confirmation that the exception covers your exact entry. Keep enough capacity for its security queue and walk; otherwise retain the hotel rest block. The Palace-only side approach does not require Square entry.
Confirm the long transfer, then keep the parks flexible
Confirm the dated English Mutianyu product, Exit C meeting point, admission inclusion, cable-car cost and return pickup. Keep the operator’s issued confirmation. Temple and Summer Palace have staffed purchase routes, but capacity and temporary closures can still change the day. Keep accommodation terms suitable for the remaining movable blocks.
Adjust the length before compressing the main visits
With three full days, keep the confirmed Palace and separate Wall day, then choose Temple of Heaven for ritual architecture or Summer Palace for the imperial lake and gardens. With two days, keep Palace plus Wall if both are the reason for your trip; if the long Wall transfer is too much, use one city park instead. With an extra day, add a hutong or separately reserved National Museum block. Keep departure morning clear and match the complete station or PEK/PKX code to your issued onward ticket.
Use the shorter version when walking capacity is limited
The Palace has extensive courtyards and standing queues; the Wall adds steps and uneven ground even when using the cable car. Choose the shorter versions when you prefer fewer sights and more seated time. Omit the Square, hill climbs or extra side halls to keep the return manageable, and use the lower-walking guide for detailed turnaround points and transport choices.
When the plan stops working
- Palace sold out for the first target date
Try another feasible museum-open date within your four days at its own seven-day, 20:00 release. Keep the first valid confirmed booking, then move the flexible city blocks around it. If you also chose the Square, reconcile that entry record separately.
- No Palace ticket confirmed for any feasible day
Remove the Palace interior. Keep the separate Wall, Temple and Summer Palace days, respecting Monday closures, and use the spare central-city block for a confirmed replacement park, rest or a short hotel-area walk. A Square reservation remains separate. Avoid unofficial gate-entry promises.
- Mutianyu weather, cable-car alert or transport failure
Move the Wall to a flexible city day only after the operator confirms the replacement date and the original order’s change terms. Keep the confirmed Palace date. If no workable transfer exists, omit the Wall; do not squeeze it into Palace day.
- Optional Square entry or security queue does not work
Keep the Temple visit and seated lunch, then return to the hotel. A Palace ticket may support Square entry only under a currently confirmed eligible-booking exception; a roadside view or unconfirmed request is not Square admission. Do not spend your planned rest time trying an uncertain gate.
- Pain or fatigue is higher than expected
Use the nearest signed exit and end the sightseeing block. Remove optional walking before removing the seated break; do not add another ticketed attraction to fill the afternoon.
Save the action checklist
- Write the four sightseeing dates and weekdays; set 20:00 Beijing-time release reminders seven calendar days before each feasible Palace target.
- Open the Palace English booking page, then save the issued order and exact passport details offline.
- Confirm the English Mutianyu bus for the selected day and retain the return-meeting instructions.
- Only if you still choose a Square visit and your remaining time and walking energy permit it, secure the Square's separate reservation or confirm an eligible attraction-booking exception for the exact date, session and entrance. Otherwise keep the rest block.
- Save the Temple's planned East Gate and conditional South/East exit, the Summer Palace East Palace Gate out-and-back and its confirmed lawful pickup, plus the hotel's actual return pin; check closures and your chosen route length before each day.
Questions for this trip
How many days and hotel nights does this require?
Four full sightseeing days. Arrival and departure are separate. Arriving the previous day and departing the morning after the fourth day needs five hotel nights; change the nights if your arrival or departure uses a different part of the day.
Must every attraction be booked a week in advance?
No. Palace admission needs an advance ticket. A dedicated Square visit uses its own reservation unless the authority confirms a qualifying booking exception for your entry. Confirm the dated Mutianyu return transport. Temple and Summer Palace have staffed purchase routes, subject to capacity, ticket type and current opening.
What if the official Palace date shows no availability?
First check whether the date is inside the seven-day window and whether its 20:00 release has occurred. If released inventory is sold out, try another feasible open day or use the replacement city block. Keep the issued confirmation; a booking window or reseller listing does not reserve admission.
Can I combine the Great Wall and Forbidden City if I lose a day?
Keep the Palace and Great Wall on separate days: the transfers, security and sightseeing each need their own block. If you lose a full day, retain the confirmed Palace and Wall bookings and drop a flexible park or the optional Square.
