Compare the three directions before booking
Beijing → Shanghai
Start with the exact station pair in the offer; Beijing South / 北京南 → Shanghai Hongqiao / 上海虹桥 is the pair in the historical example. Compare the departure from your Beijing hotel and the arrival at your Shanghai hotel. A very early departure can cost sleep or an extra car; a late arrival can add a taxi. Choose the departure that leaves a workable hotel journey at both ends.
Once the pair is selected, use Beijing’s departure-hub guide and Shanghai’s railway arrivals for the two local ends.
Beijing → Xi’an
The retained example uses Beijing West / 北京西 → Xi’an North / 西安北. A city-wide query can return a different station. Compare that offer’s full names with your hotel locations before paying. Keep a Lintong museum visit on its own sightseeing day unless the issued journey and separately checked museum-to-station route leave enough time.
Use the exact Beijing departure hub and Xi’an’s airport and rail arrivals; choose the Xi’an sightseeing days after reserving the transfer day.
Xi’an → Shanghai
Compare a daytime train using its exact Xi’an station with a same-date flight using its exact XIY terminal and SHA or PVG arrival. Use the same hotel doors for both. A flight can reduce the complete journey, while a train can simplify luggage and station travel; the actual offers and ground transfers decide. Give a late arrival its own taxi cost and next-morning consequence.
Match the Xi’an hub to your departure hotel, then use Shanghai’s SHA/PVG transfer guide for a flight or the railway-arrival section for a train. Set the same Shanghai hotel in both calculations.
Read the full station name before paying
Beijing
北京南 Beijing South · 北京西 Beijing West · 北京丰台 Beijing Fengtai · 北京 Beijing · 北京北 Beijing North · 清河 Qinghe
Separate stations. Copy the full name from the chosen ticket into the taxi or map destination.
Xi’an
西安北 Xi’an North · 西安 Xi’an · 西安东 Xi’an East
Do not translate Xi’an automatically as Xi’an North; keep the full name supplied by the service.
Shanghai
上海虹桥 Shanghai Hongqiao · 上海 Shanghai · 上海南 Shanghai South · 上海松江 Shanghai Songjiang
The metro example below applies to Hongqiao Railway Station only.
After choosing the exact arrival station, plan the last ride to the hotel: use Shanghai’s airport and railway arrivals, Xi’an’s arrival choices or Beijing’s arrival choices for the city at the end of your train journey.
中文:请送我到[完整车站名称],不是[容易混淆的车站]。这是我的车票,请帮我确认出发站。
English: Please take me to [full station name], not [the other station]. This is my ticket; please help me confirm the departure station.
Build a hotel-to-hotel time and cost comparison
Write two local times for each option: when you leave the departure hotel and when you reach the arrival hotel. Count the actual service’s arrival date when it crosses midnight. Train running time and flight time are only one part of that interval.
- Before departure: work back from the selected service time through the operator’s required arrival/boarding cutoff and the hotel-to-hub route. Keep time for luggage, station entry or airport security.
- After arrival: add the exit from the railway platform or baggage collection at the terminal, then the complete journey to the hotel entrance. Check the last metro for that station, direction and date; use a priced taxi or confirmed transfer if the chain will not fit.
- Same endpoints: compare both modes from the same departure hotel to the same arrival hotel. Recalculate when either hub changes; Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station are different pickup points.
- Usable time: choose an acceptable hotel-arrival limit and leave room for delay. Do not count the transfer day again as a full museum day or promise an early next morning after a late arrival.
Train party total = all train tickets and seller fees + departure-hotel-to-station cost + arrival-station-to-hotel cost.
Flight party total = all flight tickets, compulsory taxes and required baggage + departure-hotel-to-airport cost + arrival-airport-to-hotel cost.
Count a shared car once, and keep child, baggage and cancellation conditions comparable. A lower ticket price is useful only after those transfer differences. The historical example below shows why a RMB 37 train saving can disappear in the night-arrival bill; it supplies no present-day taxi quote.
If the actual offer is an overnight train, compare the berth, replaced hotel night and next morning’s fatigue before counting the saved day as sightseeing.
What to keep with an actual train offer
- Travel date and direction, including the arrival date for an overnight service.
- Full departure and arrival station names, train number and local times.
- Class or assigned berth, fare including any seller fee, and whether a ticket is issued or still waitlisted.
- Both station transfers and an arrival plan that works if the train is late.
- The final amount shown before payment. A route page’s “from” price is not a quote for this journey.
Foreign-passport travellers can use the 12306 English website or a staffed railway ticket window. Take the original passport used for the ticket; a saved itinerary is not a replacement travel document. If an online search fails, show staff the date and full city or station pair instead of buying repeatedly through different sellers.
For the booking channel and order status, use 12306 versus Trip.com. For the document and station-entry steps, use foreign-passport train booking. Finish those checks before committing the local pickup.
Rail examples for 20 September 2026
These past offers are evidence for the calculation, not current services, prices or available seats. The anonymous official queries were checked on 13 September; no ticket was held or purchased, and no passport or payment test was performed. Prices are per ordinary adult.
These selected offers were returned for Sunday 20 September 2026. A city search can include other stations; each example below keeps its actual station pair. The selection demonstrates useful choices, not an exhaustive cheapest-train ranking.
Beijing South → Shanghai Hongqiao
- Historical sample
- G1 · 20 September 2026 · 北京南 06:30 → 上海虹桥 11:24
- Decision
- 4 hours 54 minutes; second class RMB 626, available (有) when checked. This is a concrete morning departure reaching Shanghai before lunch; compare the cost of reaching Beijing South that early with a later departure.
- Conditions
- Ordinary-adult public offer, not an issued ticket or the lowest fare across the route.
Beijing West → Xi’an North
- Historical sample
- G321 · 20 September 2026 · 北京西 07:00 → 西安北 11:20
- Decision
- 4 hours 20 minutes; second class RMB 618, available (有). Keep Beijing West and Xi’an North in your transport plan. The city search also returned services using Xi’an and Xi’an East; those are different stations.
- Conditions
- Actual hotel transfer costs and the price at purchase depend on the chosen trip.
Xi’an North → Shanghai Hongqiao
- Historical sample
- G92 · 20 September 2026 · 西安北 08:51 → 上海虹桥 14:43
- Decision
- 5 hours 52 minutes; second class RMB 756, available (有). G1942 at 15:56–23:57 cost RMB 719 with seats available, but its RMB 37 saving brings a night arrival. See the real flight comparison and last-mile consequence below.
- Conditions
- Availability is a query-time snapshot; fares do not include hotel transfers.
Historical Shanghai Hongqiao metro and taxi calculation
The timetable and tariff in this worked example belong to the original source checks. Confirm the travel-date last service and actual taxi tariff for your journey.
- Historical Line 2 departure
- For Sunday 20 September 2026, the published timetable checked on 13 September gives an eastbound Line 2 departure at 22:48 towards Guanglan Road, serving People’s Square.
- Historical Line 10 boundary
- The listed Line 10 departure is 22:30. Line 10 has Friday/Saturday extensions; they do not supply a Sunday late train.
Recheck notices on the travel day.
Allow a separate planning margin to leave the railway platform, walk to the metro, buy a ticket and pass security.
- G92 with the stated allowance
- With a deliberately cautious 45-minute allowance, the observed G92 arrival at 14:43 reaches the metro around 15:28.
- G1942 with the same allowance
- G1942 arriving at 23:57 reaches it around 00:42 Monday and should be budgeted as a taxi arrival.
These transfer times are assumptions applied to actual train times, not measurements or guarantees. The exact metro fare was not captured.
- Retained standard taxi tariff
- For a licensed standard city taxi, the tariff retained in the original example starts at RMB 14 for 3 km, then RMB 2.70/km to 15 km and RMB 4.05/km above 15 km.
- Assumed 25 km calculation
- A purely illustrative 25 km metered trip is 14 + 12 × 2.70 + 10 × 4.05 = RMB 86.90, about RMB 87 before extras.
- Illustrative night subtotal
- Applying the 23:00–05:00 30% surcharge to this simplified distance subtotal gives about RMB 113.
This is an approximate night calculation, not an official separately itemised night quote.
The 25 km distance is assumed, not a measured route to People’s Square or your hotel. Some vehicle categories start at RMB 16. Waiting, low-speed operation, permitted peak or holiday adjustments and tolls can raise the bill; district and accessible taxi tariffs differ. Use the actual address and meter, not this example as a fixed fare.

Historical Xi’an–Shanghai train and flight comparison
This is the retained 20 September 2026 calculation, checked on 13 September. The product, price, seat and refund/change displays below are historical, and the transfer allowances are illustrative.
- Historical HO1218 timing
- On the same 20 September search, Juneyao HO1218 left XIY Xianyang T3 at 11:15 and reached SHA Hongqiao Airport T2 at 13:35, 2 hours 20 minutes.
- Historical fare and seats
- The opened special-economy L product was CNY 770 including tax and showed seats available.
It included 20 kg checked luggage and one cabin bag up to 5 kg. This arrival is at the airport, not Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
For a separate hotel-door comparison, use the same hypothetical Xi’an departure hotel and the same hypothetical Shanghai destination hotel for both modes.
- G92 hotel-door inputs
- For G92, assume 60 minutes from the hotel to Xi’an North, 60 minutes at the station, 45 minutes from train arrival to the metro platform, then another 45 minutes for the metro wait, ride and walk to the Shanghai hotel door.
- HO1218 hotel-door inputs
- For HO1218, assume 60 minutes from the Xi’an hotel to XIY, 120 minutes before departure, 45 minutes after landing to collect baggage and leave the terminal, then 60 minutes to the same Shanghai hotel door.
These are illustrative allowances, not checked routes, boarding cutoffs or promises for a named hotel.
- G92 hotel-door result
- Under those assumptions, G92 runs from leaving the Xi’an hotel at 06:51 to reaching the Shanghai hotel at about 16:13, 9 hours 22 minutes.
The 15:28 time in the metro example is only the platform arrival; the separate 45-minute onward allowance produces 16:13 at the hotel.
- HO1218 hotel-door result
- HO1218 runs from 08:15 to about 15:20, 7 hours 5 minutes.
In this hotel-door model, flying takes 2 hours 17 minutes less and reaches the same assumed destination 53 minutes earlier. Replace both modes’ ground-transfer allowances with routes to your actual hotels before using that difference to choose.
- Ticket difference
- HO1218 costs RMB 14 more on the ticket.
- Ticket plus transfer components
- For one adult, rail is RMB 756 plus both station transfers; flying is RMB 770 plus both airport transfers and any baggage beyond the included allowance.
Choose the flight if its later departure from the Xi’an hotel and the shorter journey under your actual hotel-transfer plan are worth that ticket difference plus any extra airport cost; choose G92 if its station journeys, baggage handling or rail experience suit you better. Neither is proved cheapest hotel to hotel without the actual address-based transfers.
The L fare showed paid changes and refunds. Per adult, the displayed refund/change charges were RMB 154/77 more than 168 hours before departure, 231/154 at 48–168 hours, 539/385 at 4–48 hours, and 693/539 after the four-hour-before-departure threshold. These were reference terms, not a refund promise; an applicable fare difference may be additional. No tax/fuel split or checkout was inspected. Do not replace this product with the calendar’s lower from-price: the observed RMB 450 flight reached Pudong late at 23:10, and its detailed product was not checked.
Six conditional examples
The G92, G1942 and HO1218 references below are historical 20 September 2026 offers. The transfer margins and other personal scenarios are stated planning assumptions; use the condition with your own issued trip.
The arrival that keeps a metro option
- Conditions
- Actual G92 arrives at Shanghai Hongqiao at 14:43 on Sunday 20 September; allow 45 minutes from train arrival to the metro platform.
- Action
- The planning platform time is 15:28, well before the published 22:48 Line 2 departure. The 45-minute transfer is an allowance, not a measured promise; check service notices.
A late bargain needs a taxi budget
- Conditions
- Actual G1942 arrives at Hongqiao at 23:57 on 20 September, with the same 45-minute allowance.
- Action
- The planning platform time is 00:42 on 21 September, after the Sunday timetable departures. Its rail fare saves RMB 37 against G92; add the actual night taxi bill before calling it cheaper.
A city search changes the Beijing station
- Conditions
- The result says Beijing Fengtai but the traveller has planned to leave from Beijing West.
- Action
- Recalculate the journey to Fengtai before buying. If already ticketed, inspect change options or go to the actual booked station when there is adequate time; the stations are not interchangeable.
The Xi’an arrival is not the one expected
- Conditions
- A service arrives at Xi’an station while the planned hotel pickup is at Xi’an North.
- Action
- Use the train’s actual arrival station to revise the pickup. Do not ask a driver to infer it from the city name. Any difference in the railway fare should be compared with that revised transfer.
A museum day competes with the next train
- Conditions
- The traveller wants to visit the Terracotta Warriors before leaving Xi’an for Shanghai.
- Action
- Do not book the museum around an assumed late train. Use an issued departure time and a separately checked journey back to its exact station, or make the train journey the following day. The observed 15:56 G1942 departs later than G92 but reaches Shanghai near midnight; it is not a guarantee that a museum visit plus the station journey fits.
Flying may reverse the rail choice
- Conditions
- A traveller values the usable hours left in Shanghai more than a particular train experience.
- Action
- Compare a date-bound rail offer with a date-bound flight including airport travel, baggage, security time and arrival transport. The G92 and HO1218 comparison below uses the same assumed departure and destination hotel doors for both modes. Its result changes if either hotel transfer takes longer.
When the original plan fails
Only waitlist is offered
Treat the seat as unconfirmed. Compare another direct departure and retain a workable hotel or transport alternative. A waitlist’s estimated success rate is not a promise of fulfilment.
The booked station is wrong
Check the live change or refund options before cancelling. Use the actual booked station only if there is enough time to reach it. Free changes, replacement inventory and a refund amount are not guaranteed.
The train is late for the metro
Check official metro signs on arrival. If service has ended, follow the railway station’s taxi signs to the licensed taxi queue, show the full hotel address and keep the receipt. Hongqiao Railway Station is not an airport terminal pickup point.
Only a no-seat ticket remains
Choose another departure if standing or sitting without an assigned place is unsuitable. A no-seat ticket is not a confirmed seat or sleeper. Check the actual class before paying.
What is still unknown
The historical 20 September 2026 rail offers and HO1218 flight retain their dates, times, fares and then-displayed availability. No exhaustive cheapest-fare survey, issued seat, passport/payment acceptance or exact hotel-transfer price has been established. A different date, station, hotel, baggage requirement or delay can change the result. Reprice the actual trip rather than treating this snapshot as stock held for you.
Confirm date, stations, ticket and arrival transport
- Correct travel and arrival dates
- Full departure and arrival station names
- Acceptable class or berth and confirmed ticket status
- Final total amount
- A usable arrival plan if the metro has closed
