Count calendar days, usable days and hotel nights
Calendar days include arrival and departure dates. A fully usable day is available from morning to evening, but can be spent transferring. A sightseeing day is what remains after those moves. A hotel night is a bed after that day, including the arrival night.
In the pattern below, arrive on Day 0, use Days 1–11, sleep in Shanghai after Day 11 and depart on Day 12. That is 13 calendar days, 11 fully usable days and 12 hotel nights. If your trip has only 11 calendar days with partial arrival and departure, it does not supply this 11-day middle window. Likewise, a longer calendar span does not fix usable days until the actual flight times and other commitments are counted. If you mean 10 calendar days including arrival and departure, start with the two-base, nine-night plan: seven full sightseeing days and one intercity transfer. The three-city comparison below needs the longer eleven-full-day window.
The three-city bed ledger is Beijing 5 + Zhangjiajie 3 + Shanghai 4 = 12 nights. The four-city ledger is Beijing 5 + Xi’an 2 + Zhangjiajie 3 + Shanghai 2 = 12 nights. Moving between Wulingyuan and Yongding can split the Zhangjiajie nights between two hotels; it does not add a night or a day.
Use Beijing, Zhangjiajie and Shanghai
The default spends nine days sightseeing and two full days transferring. It preserves four Beijing days, two Zhangjiajie days and three Shanghai days.
Four sightseeing days
Do: keep four Beijing days. Sleep: Beijing on arrival Day 0 and after Days 1–4, five nights in all.
Full transfer day
Move: use the whole day for the booked journey and hotel arrival. Sleep: Zhangjiajie. Do not attach a must-do attraction.
Two sightseeing days
Do: protect both mountain days. Sleep: Zhangjiajie after each, making three nights including the transfer arrival. Any Wulingyuan/Yongding hotel move stays inside this allocation.
Full transfer day
Move: use the whole day to reach the Shanghai hotel. Sleep: Shanghai. Treat any spare arrival time as recovery.
Three sightseeing days
Do: choose three city days. Sleep: Shanghai after each, making four nights. Depart on Day 12, with the previous night already in Shanghai.
Use four cities only when both trade-offs are accepted
Reverse the default only when the Terracotta Army is irreplaceable and the traveller accepts a third full transfer day plus Shanghai falling from three sightseeing days to one. The reversal spends eight days sightseeing and three full days transferring.
Four sightseeing days
Do: retain four Beijing days. Sleep: Beijing on arrival Day 0 and after Days 1–4, five nights.
Full transfer day
Move: reserve the day for the booked journey. Sleep: Xi’an, the first of two nights.
One sightseeing day
Do: keep the irreplaceable Xi’an reason, such as the Terracotta Army. Sleep: Xi’an again; no second city sightseeing day is included.
Full transfer day
Move: reserve the whole day. Sleep: Zhangjiajie. No must-do attraction is promised after arrival.
Two sightseeing days
Do: keep both nature days. Sleep: Zhangjiajie after each, three nights including arrival. Any change of local hotel stays within these days.
Full transfer day
Move: this is the third full transfer day. Sleep: Shanghai, the first of two nights.
One sightseeing day
Do: keep one Shanghai day. Sleep: Shanghai again before departing on Day 12.

You do not need to search a live rail timetable before making this city-count decision. First accept either two or three full transfer days. After choosing, confirm each exact-date leg before payment; if a leg no longer fits the reserved transfer day, remove Xi’an rather than recasting a sightseeing day as travel.
Continue with the matching city result
Use each city guide to choose the visits within this allocation. Keep the full transfer days and the twelve-night bed ledger; a longer stay suggested for one city needs a day or night removed elsewhere.
Beijing · keep four sightseeing days →
Compare what four days can cover, then choose the booking and recovery tasks that fit your route.
Zhangjiajie · choose for two full days →
Use the two-full-day choice: one Wulingyuan high circuit plus Tianmen, or two Wulingyuan blocks for a slower landscape visit. Keep this allocation to two days and allow the hotel move after the park when choosing both areas.
Shanghai · three days by default, one in the reversal →
Choose among the current guide’s riverfront, Pudong, old-city, street and museum combinations. With one day, select one compatible city block; three days leave room for different areas. A full Disney or out-of-city day uses one of these days.
Xi’an reversal only · one full Lintong day →
Use the Lintong execution section for the irreplaceable Terracotta Army day. This allocation does not include the overview’s three-night, two-full-day city plan.
Original example: 3–15 September 2026
The original planning case used a Beijing arrival on 3 September 2026 and a Shanghai departure on 15 September for a first-time independent traveller. The 4–14 September middle window supplied eleven full usable days, including transfers. The assumptions were ordinary mobility, medium luggage, daytime direct travel and second class if rail was booked. This preserves the original case; it is not a current timetable, price or confirmed booking.

If the plan fails
A transfer runs late
- First action
- Delete the first optional activity after arrival.
- Alternative
- Protect sleep and the next full city day.
- Escalation
- If the lost time cannot be absorbed, remove Xi’an or another optional stop instead of borrowing from every city.
An exact-date booking does not fit inside its reserved transfer day
- First action
- Keep the day as a transfer day and try another direct option for that date.
- Alternative
- Use the three-city route if the extra Xi’an move will consume a sightseeing day.
- Escalation
- Stop adding the fourth city; a live timetable cannot create another day.
The Shanghai departure buffer is threatened
- First action
- Protect the final night in Shanghai before departure Day 12.
- Alternative
- Remove the last optional activity or the optional city.
- Escalation
- Do not depend on a long-distance arrival on departure day.
Stop line
Do not add Xi’an unless the Terracotta Army is irreplaceable and the traveller knowingly accepts both the third full transfer day and only one Shanghai sightseeing day. If either condition is false, use the three-city default.
Do this now: copy the three-city route into the trip plan. Change to four cities only by writing “Terracotta Army is irreplaceable” and “one Shanghai day accepted” beside it.
What this result does not cover
- It does not decide visa or transit eligibility.
- It does not claim a train, flight, departure time, journey duration, price or bookable inventory.
- This page closes the city-count decision. For spending, use the Shanghai three-day budget guide’s published worked total and calculator, then reprice your own stay.
- Different arrival or departure cities, usable-day counts, mobility needs, luggage, overnight travel or priority cities require a fresh allocation.
- It protects the night before departure in Shanghai; do not replace it with a same-day long-distance connection.
Inputs and review boundary
The relative day allocations, hotel-night arithmetic, transfer-day treatment and default are disclosed editorial inputs. The original September dates remain in the historical example.
