East Coast & Lower Yangtze: choose cities, mountain or coast

For a first seven-night city, garden and lake trip, start with Shanghai (3) → Suzhou (2) → Hangzhou (2). This gives each city a stay but leaves Huangshan and Fujian for another journey. Choose the Huangshan branch when mountain scenery earns a weather-flex base; choose Xiamen → Quanzhou instead when island architecture and port history are the point.

These night counts assume a daytime arrival and a booked onward ticket. A late arrival, early departure or slow transfer removes sightseeing time; add a night or drop a stop. Use dated train, ferry and park bookings before locking each overnight base.

How the places connect

The diagram shows route choices; use 12306 for actual rail legs and times. Shanghai is the city gateway; Huangshan is an inland branch; Fujian is a different coast trip.

Three usable route shapes

Each version gives every overnight base a reason. Pick one; the inland and coast branches are alternatives to adding more stops to the city route.

CITY + GARDENS + LAKE · 7 nights

Shanghai 上海 → Suzhou 苏州 → Hangzhou 杭州

Why this route: Choose this when city walking, gardens and a lake are the reasons for coming east. Nanjing can replace Hangzhou if museums and urban history matter more than a lake landscape; that changes the last transfer and departure city. Move between bases:

Book the arrival to Shanghai first. Search Shanghai → Suzhou and Suzhou → Hangzhou by exact station on 12306; each hotel move uses a travel block. Depart from Hangzhou only if the flight is actually booked, or allow a separate return to Shanghai. Book the actual station pair with your passport →

When to cut it:

With five nights, keep Shanghai plus Suzhou or Shanghai plus Hangzhou. The shorter version fits two cities.

CITY + MOUNTAIN · 8 nights

Shanghai 上海 → Hangzhou 杭州 → Huangshan 黄山 area

Move between bases:

Plan the rail gateway, scenic-area entrance and onward bus as three separate parts. A Huangshan-named rail station is some distance from the mountain trail. Leave room after the park visit before a long onward journey. Book the actual station pair with your passport →

When to cut it:

If the schedule has no spare day for poor mountain visibility, choose the city route now or replace Hangzhou with Huangshan rather than promising both landscapes.

COAST + PORT HISTORY · 5 nights

Xiamen 厦门 → Quanzhou 泉州

Why this route: Choose Fujian as its own coast trip when Gulangyu's settlement architecture and Quanzhou's port history matter more than adding another garden city. Wuyi Mountain or a tulou village is a separate inland branch, left for a longer trip. Move between bases:

Enter through Xiamen if that is your booked flight or rail gateway. Search the exact Xiamen → Quanzhou station pair; arrange the Gulangyu ferry by the operator's current outbound route. Keep a mainland city day available if wind or a cancellation stops the island visit.

When to cut it:

For a shorter stay, choose Xiamen or Quanzhou as the single base. Add an inland Fujian stop only after fixing its actual village or mountain access and an extra overnight.

Some places are route anchors; others are a swap or an extra branch. Compare their role here, then arrange local visiting details before booking.

Shanghai

Use it for the riverfront and contrasting districts, and as the arrival anchor for a Jiangsu/Zhejiang route. Choose the Shanghai visit, then set its hotel base.

Jiangsu

Suzhou

Choose classical gardens and an old-city stay rather than a second skyline city. Choose the Suzhou visit, then set its hotel base.

Boundary: Pick the gardens you truly want; a garden visit and the hotel move need more than a passing train stop.

Jiangsu

Nanjing

Swap it for Hangzhou when urban history and museums matter more than West Lake.

Boundary: This swaps Nanjing for Hangzhou within the seven-night sample.

Zhejiang

Hangzhou

Choose West Lake and the surrounding hills as the landscape break from Shanghai and Suzhou. Choose the Hangzhou visit, then set its hotel base.

Boundary: Set the final departure city and search the actual Suzhou–Hangzhou train before choosing this order.

Anhui

Huangshan, Xidi and Hongcun

Choose mountain scenery first; use a Huizhou village for a different architecture day if the weather and transfers leave room.

Boundary: Mountain entrance, shuttle and lodging base are separate choices. City-centre or rail-station names leave park access to a separate ground transfer.

Fujian coast

Xiamen, Gulangyu and Quanzhou

Choose an island-and-port-history journey rather than extending a Shanghai weekend indefinitely. Use Xiamen’s city and ferry day and Quanzhou’s separate city visit to decide which base earns its nights.

When the plan changes

Mountain access

Huangshan North rail station, Huangshan City and the scenic-area entrance are different points. The scenic-area transport page maps the South Gate transfer network, but the boarding stop for a particular shuttle comes from its ticket. Choose the mountain entrance, ticketed stop and hotel base before treating a rail arrival as a park day.

Summer and coastal weather

Shanghai’s municipal weather guide identifies summer rain and late-summer typhoon exposure. A city day can move indoors; a Huangshan view day or Gulangyu ferry is less flexible. Read the forecast and operator notice shortly before travel, and keep a city or heritage day to swap in.

Ferry and fixed tickets

Gulangyu needs a dated ferry booking. Use Xiamen Ferry's departure guide to distinguish daytime and evening mainland terminals, and its booking FAQ for passport and return rules. Choose an available outward sailing, then follow the terminal named on that ticket; the piers are not interchangeable. If wind cancels service or the suitable sailing is full, use the Xiamen city day and keep Quanzhou’s separate overnight; move the island visit.

Book in this order: choose the route branch and international entry/exit → search each exact 12306 station pair and transfer day → choose overnight bases → book park admission or a ferry sailing for the actual date → keep the weather alternative available. Current availability may force a different order; hold payment for a nonrefundable branch until its key access is secured.
