Pack or buy in China: pain relief, allergy medicine, antiperspirant and bandages
The short answer for a one-month trip
For a light one-month packing list, bring the products that are difficult or risky for you to replace: one familiar antiperspirant, a small original-packaged supply of the pain/fever medicine you already use, your permitted regular allergy medicine, and enough of the exact bandage your skin tolerates. Check every active ingredient in a decongestant before packing it.
Ibuprofen, acetaminophen/paracetamol, loratadine and cetirizine have documented Chinese pharmacy products. Antiperspirants and BAND-AID products also have Chinese retail listings. That answers whether the categories exist; it does not promise your Canadian formula, adhesive or a particular shop’s stock. For a medicine refill, show the original label to a pharmacist and have the ingredient, strength and formulation checked before buying.
The carry/buy choices below are packing advice. They do not set doses or select a treatment for you. If you take regular prescriptions, have a medication allergy, are pregnant or have a condition that affects which medicines you can use, settle the trip supply with your own pharmacist or clinician before departure.
What to pack, and what can be a local refill
- ItemAntiperspirant
- Pack for this trip
- One product you already tolerate; a small non-aerosol pack keeps liquid packing simple.
- If you need to buy in China
- Show 止汗露 / 止汗走珠. Check the label says it reduces perspiration; 香体 / 除臭 alone may only describe fragrance or odor control.
- ItemIbuprofen
- Pack for this trip
- A small labelled supply of your familiar product for occasional use; do not rely on a refill for a regular essential medicine.
- If you need to buy in China
- Show 布洛芬 and the original label. Ask the pharmacist to match strength per unit and formulation; 缓释 means extended/sustained release.
- ItemAcetaminophen / paracetamol
- Pack for this trip
- Your familiar product if this is the pain/fever medicine you normally use.
- If you need to buy in China
- Show 对乙酰氨基酚(扑热息痛). Check single ingredient versus combination, strength and release form. Tylenol / 泰诺 / 泰诺林 by itself is insufficient.
- ItemAntihistamine
- Pack for this trip
- The supply of your established allergy medicine that you expect to need, subject to the import check below.
- If you need to buy in China
- Match your existing ingredient: loratadine = 氯雷他定; cetirizine = 盐酸西替利嗪. Do not switch between these simply because both are sold.
- ItemDecongestant
- Pack for this trip
- Keep the full ingredient panel. For a combination or uncertain product, confirm its import status before packing a personal supply.
- If you need to buy in China
- Take the label and passport to a staffed pharmacy. Oral pseudoephedrine combinations have extra sales controls; online delivery is not a fallback for them.
- ItemBandage with known adhesive reaction
- Pack for this trip
- Enough of the exact product/model you already tolerate for the month, plus non-adhesive sterile dressings and a fixing method your skin already tolerates.
- If you need to buy in China
- Show 创可贴 for an adhesive bandage or 无胶无菌敷料 for a non-adhesive sterile dressing. A BAND-AID logo or “hypoallergenic” label does not establish that an unfamiliar adhesive is suitable for you.
Bring medicines in labelled packaging; check controlled ingredients separately
Shanghai Customs and the Chongqing Government distinguish ordinary personal medicines from narcotic or psychotropic medicines. Medicines without those controlled substances may be carried in reasonable quantities for personal use, subject to Customs supervision. This is not a blanket 30-day allowance for every medicine. Keep original labelled packs and a medicine list; carry your prescription or medical documentation where applicable. The Chongqing guidance advises proactively showing medicines and supporting documents to Customs; clearance remains subject to the officer’s review. (Sources 1 and 2.)
A narcotic or Category I psychotropic medicine has a different document and quantity rule: a medical diagnosis certificate, identification and no more than the applicable single-prescription maximum. Do not apply the ordinary-medicine packing advice to it. For a combination cold/decongestant product, check every active ingredient rather than assuming that Canadian over-the-counter status settles Chinese entry rules. Local pharmacy sale restrictions and border permission are separate questions.
If a product contains a controlled ingredient or its status is unclear, ask the Chinese Embassy or your Chinese consulate in Canada before departure. The Embassy’s general switchboard is +1 613 789 3434; the official contact entry is in Source 12. Give the full ingredient names, milligrams per unit, total quantity, trip dates and arrival airport, then ask which entry documents and quantity limit apply. Keep the response with the labelled product. Do not pack an unconfirmed restricted product on the assumption that a small amount will be accepted.
Carry-on details for light packing
- Leaving Canada: toiletry liquids, gels and aerosols must be in containers no larger than 100 ml / 100 g, fitting in one clear resealable 1 L bag. CATSA allows prescription and essential non-prescription liquid medicines above 100 ml; present them separately for screening. This exemption does not make a large antiperspirant a medicine. (Source 3.)
- Flying within China: CAAC permits small personal travel cosmetics only under its conditions, including one of each type, a container no larger than 100 ml and inspection. Essential liquid medicines needed during the journey require security confirmation. International flights departing China use the 100 ml container / one 1 L bag rule for ordinary liquids. (Source 4.)
- Keep your medicines accessible in hand luggage and retain their labels. If a liquid medicine or aerosol needs special handling, give the airline the exact product and container size before the flight; airport screening acceptance is separate from permission to import it. Transit-airport rules may also apply.
Can I buy antiperspirant in China?
Yes, antiperspirant roll-ons have current Chinese retail listings, including 舒耐 (Rexona). Bring one familiar product and treat a local purchase as a refill. In a personal-care shop, show 止汗露 or 止汗走珠 and check the actual container for antiperspirant wording. If you need a particular sensitive-skin or fragrance-free formula, match the ingredients on your own pack.
The JD page in Source 9 demonstrates listing presence, including different fragrances and packs. It is not proof that a nearby physical shop has the same product or that an online order will accept your phone, payment and hotel address. If a local refill cannot be confirmed, your packed product is the ready fallback.
Can I buy ibuprofen or Tylenol?
Yes, ibuprofen and acetaminophen/paracetamol products are documented in Chinese pharmacies. Ask for the ingredient rather than a brand: 布洛芬 for ibuprofen; 对乙酰氨基酚 for acetaminophen/paracetamol. Buy with a pharmacist’s advice and the original label in hand.
Here is the practical brand trap: Zhangjiagang’s July 2026 pharmacy report lists 泰诺 as 酚麻美敏片, a combination cold medicine, while its July 2025 report lists plain acetaminophen tablets and 泰诺林 extended-release tablets and liquid drops. These dated examples show why “the Tylenol one” is not a complete request. They are not a shopping list or a current stock promise. (Source 5.)
- Show the front and full ingredient panel of your own product, not just a photo of the brand name.
- Ask the pharmacist to identify the active ingredient(s), milligrams per tablet/capsule or concentration per ml, and the dosage form/release type.
- Check whether the offered medicine is single-ingredient or 复方 (a combination). Have the pharmacist check for duplicated ingredients in anything else you are taking.
- Follow the actual product label and pharmacist’s instructions. If the match is unclear, do not convert by tablet count or accept a different formula on the strength of the brand name.
A matching active ingredient does not establish that every inactive ingredient or an individual’s tolerance is the same. If the familiar supply is running low and a pharmacist cannot establish an appropriate refill, obtain medical advice before it runs out.
I react to ordinary bandage adhesive; can I find the exact BAND-AID product?
Bring the exact bandage product and model your skin tolerates for the month. Chinese BAND-AID / 邦迪 listings do not establish that the adhesive matches your own product. Use the model and material information to ask for a match, and use the non-adhesive backup below if it cannot be confirmed. (Source 10.)
Keep the box or a photo showing the full model, material information and barcode. Pack non-adhesive sterile dressings plus a fixing method you have already tolerated. If you lose the familiar bandages, use the pharmacy card below to explain the adhesive reaction and ask for help selecting a non-adhesive option; do not accept an unfamiliar adhesive merely because it says waterproof, fabric or hypoallergenic.
Can I buy antihistamines and decongestants?
Loratadine (氯雷他定) and cetirizine (盐酸西替利嗪) are documented in Chinese retail pharmacies. Zhoukou’s April 2026 regulator report lists both by pharmacy and product. Bring the allergy medicine you already use and ask for the same ingredient if a refill is needed. Continue with the ingredient you already use; have a pharmacist or clinician advise you before switching between them. (Source 6.)
A decongestant request needs the ingredient and route: an oral pseudoephedrine product (伪麻黄碱) is not the same product as a nasal spray (鼻喷剂). Show your current label rather than asking for a generic “medicine for nasal congestion.” Do not start a different ingredient or prolong a nasal-spray course just to avoid a medical consultation.
Chinese regulators require identity checks and registration for ephedrine-containing combination medicines; non-prescription sales are normally limited to two smallest retail packs, with prescribed quantities handled separately. These combination medicines are prohibited from internet retail. The 2026 regulator notices retain identity controls and the online restriction. Consistent handling of a foreign passport in individual pharmacy systems has not been tested. (Source 7.)
Before departure, check the import conditions for your exact combination. After arrival, if you need it, bring the original product label and passport to a staffed pharmacy. If the shop cannot complete the legal sale or cannot identify a suitable match, ask its pharmacist for a medical referral or contact your travel insurer’s medical-assistance service. Do not borrow another person’s identity or rely on delivery to bypass the restriction.
Chinese pharmacy cards: show the matching card and your own label
Medicine matching —
Meaning: I have photos of my current medicine. Please have a pharmacist check its active ingredient, strength or concentration, dosage form and release type. Please do not directly replace a single-ingredient product with a combination. I can show my other medicines and known allergies for the check.
Decongestant sale — 这是我原来用的鼻塞药及全部成分。我有外国护照。请药师确认是否需要处方、能否按规定登记购买;如果不能,请告知应去哪里就医。请不要直接用另一种成分替代。
Meaning: Here is my original decongestant and its full ingredients. I have a foreign passport. Please check whether a prescription is needed and whether the required registration can be completed; if not, please tell me where to obtain medical care. Please do not directly substitute another ingredient.
Adhesive reaction —
Meaning: I have reacted to some adhesive bandages. This is the exact product my skin has tolerated. Please check the model and materials. If the match cannot be confirmed, do not substitute by brand alone; please help me find a non-adhesive sterile dressing and check whether fixing it requires adhesive tape on the skin.
If a refill or product match fails
- For an antiperspirant or an optional replacement, use your packed product until the actual replacement can be checked.
- For an essential medicine, a new reaction or worsening symptoms, seek a pharmacist or clinician promptly; do not keep changing products by guesswork.
- For a medical emergency, call 120 and show someone nearby your current location. The number is confirmed by Canada’s China travel advice. (Source 11.)
Check the exact product before replacing it
Product and packing sources checked 12 September 2026. Pharmacy reports show dated product examples; retailer listings do not reserve local stock. Match the exact ingredients, formulation and materials at the pharmacy. For a controlled or uncertain ingredient, settle the import documents before departure; for an unavailable essential refill, seek medical advice before your supply runs out.
