Run three separate tests

- Placement

Checked baggage

- Placement
- Each physical piece must be ≤50 kg
For a China Eastern-operated domestic economy flight, the current allowance permits one cabin piece and one extra under-seat personal item. The checked allowance is a 20 kg total under the weight system. The exact ticket and operating carrier still control.
Six packed-bag decisions
Trolley 55 × 40 × 20 cm, 7.5 kg + backpack 34 × 30 × 16 cm
- Result
- Use the trolley as the one cabin piece and the backpack as the under-seat item, if both fit as packed.
Trolley 55 × 40 × 20 cm + backpack 55 × 40 × 20 cm
- Result
- Those are two cabin-sized pieces. Repack or check one; the second 55 cm bag does not fit the published personal-item reference.
Trolley 55 × 40 × 20 cm, 9 kg
- Result
- The dimensions pass but the economy cabin-piece weight does not. Repack before check-in.
Two checked bags weighing 12 kg + 8 kg
- Result
- The current domestic economy allowance is a 20 kg weight-system total; each piece must also pass the physical limits. Confirm the exact ticket.
Checked total 24 kg with a 20 kg allowance
- Result
- Four kilograms are excess. The fee needs the airline’s highest published one-way direct adult economy fare for that date, not your discounted ticket price.
MU flight number but another operating carrier
- Result
- Use the operating carrier and exact ticket. Do not transfer this China Eastern-operated-flight result to a codeshare automatically.
Domestic excess baggage is not priced from your cheap ticket
The current formula is (checked total − free allowance) × 1.5% × H, where H is the highest published one-way direct adult economy fare applicable that day. China Eastern’s English excess-fee page says to round up, while the Chinese transport conditions effective 1 July 2026 say to round to the nearest whole CNY and state that Chinese controls when the texts conflict. This page therefore uses nearest-whole CNY for planning; the carrier’s exact quote controls payment.
CNY 1,000 published fare input
- Excess
- 4 kg
- Calculation
- 4 × 1.5% × 1,000
- Result
- CNY 60
CNY 1,500 published fare input
- Excess
- 4 kg
- Calculation
- 4 × 1.5% × 1,500
- Result
- CNY 90
CNY 1,000 and CNY 1,500 are calculation inputs, not fares observed for Beijing–Xi’an or another route. Ask China Eastern for H or the exact excess quote before depending on a total.
A domestic booking after arrival is a separate transfer problem
If the China Eastern flight follows an international Air China ticket, the baggage check above answers only what the domestic flight accepts. It does not prove through-check, the collection point, entry eligibility, terminal transfer or sufficient connection time. Unless both airlines confirm the full handling in writing, plan around collecting the bag and completing the domestic check-in again.
Fix the bag before the gate fixes it for you
The backpack fails the under-seat check
- First action
- Move permitted items into the checked bag or combine into one compliant cabin piece.
- Protect
- Keep passport, money, required medicine, power banks and spare lithium batteries in the correct cabin route.
- Do not
- Do not rely on staff ignoring a second cabin-sized bag.
The cabin trolley is overweight
- First action
- Repack before security and reweigh the packed result.
- Protect
- Use the checked allowance only for items permitted in the hold.
- Do not
- Do not wait for a gate interception: the airline warns that a return to checked-baggage screening can disrupt the trip.
The ticket shows a different allowance
- First action
- Keep the ticket or booking display and ask the operating carrier to reconcile it.
- Protect
- Use the written allowance attached to the exact booking.
- Do not
- Do not substitute a forum answer or another route’s international piece-system table.
The domestic flight follows a separate international ticket
- First action
- Ask both airlines whether bags are through-checked and where the next check-in occurs.
- Protect
- Plan to collect and recheck unless written handling proves otherwise.
- Do not
- Do not treat the domestic baggage allowance as a transfer-time guarantee.
Do not use this result when
- The flight is international or regional
- Shanghai Airlines or another airline operates the flight
- The ticket displays a different baggage allowance
- The item is a pet, wheelchair, sports item, musical instrument or other special baggage
- The bag contains batteries, liquids, blades or another restricted item requiring a separate rule
Sources and verification boundary
China Eastern’s current baggage pages and transport conditions were checked 25 August 2026. Airport enforcement was not field-tested. Recheck the exact ticket, operating carrier and packed bag before departure.
