Tianmen Mountain: tickets and routes 天门山

Come for the huge opening of Tianmen Cave and a chosen summit walk. Keep a full day, book the route and morning slot first, and know the city return before going up.

8–12 October 2026 exception: the Tongcheng-carried scenic notice suspends the Cave Express Cableway and offers only a temporary A route, starting and ending at the city lower station. Do not use the C route or Mountain Gate arrival during this window; see the A card below.

Choose the date first: A scenic construction notice says the entire Tianmen main cableway stops carrying passengers from 13 October 2026, A/B packages are withdrawn from that date, and C is the only line sold; it gives no reopening date. Check the latest notice and selected-date ticket channel, then match the line, validation point, included legs and city return to the issued order. If the booking channel does not show that information, ask the operator or seller before paying or booking a non-refundable room.

Choose a day and a route

Tianmen is the city-side mountain in Yongding, separate from the sandstone pillars in Wulingyuan and the Grand Canyon glass bridge. A Forest Park ticket does not cover it. Allow roughly 5–7 hours on site plus queues and the city approach; this is a planning allowance. For both mountains, count complete sightseeing days before hotel nights.

The operator route description explains the A/B/C concepts, while the current scenic notice and selected-date order control which line and transport are actually available. The same construction notice says the city lower-to-middle cableway segment also stops from 13 October 2026. Unsafe road weather can further alter the sequence. Confirm the entrance, every uphill and downhill leg, and the city return before paying.

Entry hours: use the selected-date session and current operator notice. The admission cutoff is not the last descending cableway or city-shuttle time; ask for those separate cutoffs before committing to a summit walk.

Choose a clear mountain day if broad views matter, but a forecast cannot guarantee visibility. Fog can leave the arch visible only intermittently; heavy rain or wind can remove more than a viewpoint. Bring a layer, grippy shoes, rain protection, water and a simple lunch. If stairs, queues or exposed paths are a major difficulty, ask the operator about the entire route before buying.

Choose the route that operates on your date

Routes can combine the cave, upper escalator, cableway and scenic road differently. These cards are route checks, not promises of availability. Use only the line shown in a current operator notice and your issued order:

ROUTE C

Mountain-gate start · announced sole line from 13 October 2026

Validate at
Tianmen Mountain Gate · 天门山山门
Go up
Mountain Gate → Cave Express Cableway → Tianmen Cave → seven-stage upper escalator → summit
Come down
Return by upper escalator and Cave Express Cableway to Mountain Gate; confirm the shuttle or pickup to the city
Choose it if
C is unavailable on 8–12 October 2026; it is the announced sole line from 13 October. Confirm the issued gate-to-city leg.
ROUTE A

City lower-station start · sole line on 8–12 October 2026

Validate at
Tianmen Mountain Cableway Lower Station · 天门山索道下站
Go up
On 8–12 October: lower station → middle station cableway → scenic bus to the cave → upper escalator → summit
Come down
On 8–12 October: reverse the same escalator, bus and lower cableway to the city lower station
Choose it if
The temporary A-only window is 8–12 October. A is withdrawn from 13 October; other dates require the issued route and current notice.
ROUTE B

Mountain-gate start · unavailable on 8–12 October; withdrawn from 13 October

Validate at
Tianmen Mountain Gate · 天门山山门
Go up
Check the issued cableway or road approach to Tianmen Cave
Come down
Confirm the issued descent, final exit and city connection before boarding
Choose it if
B is unavailable during 8–12 October and withdrawn from 13 October. Use only a date and issued order for which the operator offers this line; a later reopening requires an explicit operator notice.

  1. Cave Square · 天门洞广场
  2. 999 steps or the optional lower escalator → cave opening · 天门洞
  3. Included upper seven-stage escalator · 7级穿山自动扶梯 → summit paths
  4. Upper escalator back → cave → square → the descent on your dated ticket

Arrival: before 13 October 2026, an issued A order may start at the city lower station on Dayong Road / 大庸路. From that date the main cableway no longer boards there: the construction notice retains its ticket/support counters and shuttle to Mountain Gate, while C validates at Mountain Gate. Follow the voucher's actual shuttle and validation points; if no shuttle is included, arrange a road ride to the named gate.

Inclusions: read the selected product for admission, each cableway, scenic bus, upper escalator, city shuttle and extras. A broad “cableway ticket” label does not establish every leg. Save the return exit and last city connection before entering.

Buy the right ticket with a foreign passport

Budget for a package. A seller-carried scenic announcement listed CNY 285 for an ordinary-adult package when checked; this is a dated reference, not a guaranteed current payable total. The CNY 72 government-guided admission component is not the whole trip. Read the selected-date line, included transport and final payable total before ordering.

  1. Choose the date, operating line and session. Select Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, then match the line to the latest operator notice and issued product. Keep your party on compatible lines and sessions; consider separate orders when the seller will not partially refund a multi-person booking.
  2. Choose a seller supporting your document. KKday's Tianmen listing explicitly permits passports; Trip.com has Tianmen products. A seller's generic A/B/C labels do not override the dated scenic notice. Read the chosen package's identity requirements and enter the passenger's details exactly from the original passport. If a form offers only a Chinese identity card, stop and contact the seller or scenic ticket service; never substitute another person's ID.
  3. Check the issue result. Save the issued confirmation, route, date/time, start or shuttle check-in point, inclusions, support contact and cancellation terms offline. Payment or pending supplier confirmation does not secure entry. Ask the seller to correct any transport promise that conflicts with the current operator notice.
  4. Bring the original passport and ticket. The ticket notice checked for this guide directs a passport holder to present the electronic/paper ticket for manual identity inspection. Confirm the current check-in procedure with the issuing seller and use the staffed point for your issued line; do not rely on a Chinese-ID turnstile recognising your passport.

If a line is unavailable: from 13 October 2026, A/B are withdrawn under the construction notice, not merely out of stock on one platform; C is the announced option. For any later change, compare only lines the operator offers for your date, including their entrance, transport and city return. Missing stock on one platform alone does not prove an otherwise operating line sold out everywhere. If no usable issued slot exists, move the visit date or keep another Zhangjiajie day before committing a non-refundable room.

Cancellation: read the selected seller's current refund, passenger-change, date-change and partial-order terms before paying. A dated scenic notice or another seller's waiver does not change your contract. If weather or maintenance alters your line, contact the original seller about the issued order before validating it; keep the order number and support contact offline.

Tianmen Cave: stairs or the lower escalator

Cave Square · 天门洞广场: look up at the arch and the steep stairway framed between rock walls. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for this first look and photographs. The opening and summit are higher stops; reaching the square does not finish the uphill choice.

The 999-step stairway · 上天梯: climb toward the arch only if steep steps and heights suit you. Plan roughly 30–45 minutes with pauses, longer in queues. Wet steps, fatigue or knee pain are reasons to use the operating bypass or keep the square view. These are planning estimates, not a climb to finish regardless of conditions.

Lower escalator · 登天门扶梯 / 下段扶梯: this bypass connects the square and cave, separately from the included upper system. Check the selected-date product for each direction's price and whether the escalator is operating before joining the stair queue.

Upper escalator · 7级穿山自动扶梯 / 上段扶梯: board behind the opening for the summit and keep the signed link for the return. Cableways and escalators do not certify continuous step-free travel: boarding areas, short stairs, queues and summit paths still matter.

Choose a summit walk

At the upper escalator exit, read the current route board and save that location as your return point. Choose one sector first. The paths offer cliff faces, wooded stretches and views below; a complete east-and-west circuit adds walking without guaranteeing a clearer view.

West-side cliff walk: the usual first choice

Follow the signed open west route to West Line Glass Walkway · 西线玻璃栈道 and Ghost Valley Plank Road · 鬼谷栈道. The glass section gives a view through your feet; the solid cliff path gives the broader experience of walking alongside the rock wall. Skip glass if it adds discomfort, and ask staff for the open solid-path continuation.

For a shorter visit, allocate roughly 1½–2 hours to a west-side out-and-back, turning sooner when the signed distance, crowds or return margin require it. Walk only as far as you can retrace to the escalator. Hunan's place description identifies Ghost Valley's extended cliff path; the name is not one short viewing platform.

Cherry Bay and Tianmen Temple: add a longer walk

Cherry Bay · 樱桃湾 joins the east, west and temple routes. Tianmen Temple · 天门山寺 adds courtyards and an architectural stop on the southern summit. Allow roughly 2½–3½ hours for an extended summit visit and confirm the open return to the upper escalator on the current board before leaving the west route. Reverse before the extension if the return or your stamina no longer fits.

The summit sightseeing chairlift is an optional separate product. Make it part of the return only after staff confirm its operation, ticket and exit. The cave and one useful cliff section do not require buying it.

Panlong glass and the east-side closure

Panlong Cliff Glass Walkway · 盘龙崖玻璃栈道 is another optional transparent path. The 13 May provincial notice says the separate East Line Glass Walkway · 东线玻璃栈道 closed from 12 May for repairs, while Panlong and West Line glass remained open then. No later official reopening notice was found in this check. Use today's boards for openings and any shoe-cover charge; keep the east glass section out of a fixed itinerary.

Get back to your hotel or departure hub

  1. Fix the descending cutoff before the summit walk. Ask staff for the last usable cave descent and final city-shuttle boarding time. The admission cutoff is not either of those times.
  2. Return to the upper escalator, cave and square. Follow the signed downhill transport on your issued line. For the temporary A route on 8–12 October, reverse the A card above. For C visits from 13 October 2026, the published route descends by Cave Express Cableway to Mountain Gate. Confirm any later change with staff and follow the exit on the issued order.
  3. Continue to your hotel from the exit on your issued route. On the temporary A route, arrange your pickup or onward hotel journey from the city lower station. On C, use the confirmed shuttle or pickup from Mountain Gate; check the shuttle's boarding point and last departure. If it is absent or no longer running, use a booked legal taxi or hotel pickup from the staffed exit. Confirm the destination is your exact hotel or the city lower station.
  4. Collect bags before departing. The city lower station is not your hotel or Zhangjiajie West station. Add hotel collection, then the airport/station on the ticket. Keep an early departure behind a city-side hotel night instead of relying on a fast mountain exit.

If weather, a ticket or a path changes

  • Road transport or a cableway closes: the announced 13 October 2026 main-cableway closure removes A/B sales and leaves C; do not treat an old A/B voucher as a working route. Ask the operator which line, validation point and return remain available for your issued order. A different route is usable only after staff or the issuer confirm its transport and city exit; otherwise postpone or seek rebooking.
  • Passport/order mismatch: stay at the staffed ticket point and contact the issuing seller with the order. Staff must resolve identity validation; a receipt does not authorise another passenger.
  • Glass or summit path closes: keep the cave and an open solid-path view. If no satisfying open route remains, ask the original seller about cancellation/rebooking before validating.
  • Return margin shrinks: omit the temple/second circuit, retrace to the escalator and finish the city leg. Retrieve bags and protect the onward departure.

Sources and checking dates

Route, package and passport handling sources checked ; the scenic notice for the 8–12 October temporary A route and the closure from 13 October was rechecked .

Sources and scope

Route, package and passport handling sources were checked ; selected seller terms were checked 29 September. The operator route description explains A/B/C concepts; the scenic construction notice carried by Tongcheng, rechecked , says the Cave Express Cableway stops on 8–12 October and only the temporary A route runs, returning by the same transport chain to the city lower station. From 13 October, the entire main cableway closes, A/B sales stop and C alone remains, without a reopening date. A booking channel's general A/B/C text does not prove the line currently sold for your date. Its refund language is a dated seller-channel statement. KKday supplies that seller's published passport eligibility and non-refundable terms; its generic route text is not used to override current operations.

The provincial cave description and older Forestry Bureau place guide establish named sights and the stairs, not today's operation. The May glass-path notice is a dated closure finding. Durations and route priorities are editorial planning choices. No purchase, passport scan, chair boarding, shuttle ride or trail walk was field-tested. Match the live operator notice and issued product to your travel date.
