Use the main building for a broad history visit
Book the main building at 陕西省西安市雁塔区小寨东路91号. Visit the 陕西古代文明 basic display in Halls 1–3. Add 大唐遗宝 in Hall 4 only when it is open for your date and your issued ticket covers it; add a paid mural exhibition only when that subject is worth another ticket and more time.
The main building is near Xiaozhai and Dayanta. The 秦汉馆 / Qin-Han Gallery is in Xixian New Area, with a different address and, under the current museum guide, entry without an advance reservation. Use the main-building order here. The Xi’an city guide helps you decide whether this museum, Beilin or the old-city Wall deserves your city day.

Complete the main-building reservation
- Choose the correct venue. Open the official Shaanxi History Museum visitor guide and follow its 陕西历史博物馆 WeChat reservation entry. Select 本馆 and your actual visit date and session.
- Prepare the passport details. The museum lists a passport as a valid reservation document for a non-mainland visitor at this building. Use each traveller’s exact document name and number, then carry the original passport used in the successful order.
- Reserve at the release. Basic-display tickets open five days ahead at 17:00 China time. The system allows advance filling of date, session and visitor information. At release, press the reservation action and open 成功订单查询 / successful orders; advance filling alone expires without admission.
- Keep the selected session. The ticket is valid for its date and session and requires the original booked document plus the successful order. If plans change, cancel through official order lookup before that session’s last validation to avoid the museum’s no-show restriction.
Basic admission is free. The mural exhibition has separate purchase rules. The museum’s visitor guide says a successful official mural ticket also covers the basic display without a duplicate free order; read the issued product’s areas and session before relying on it. The foreign-passport museum guide compares this route with the Terracotta Museum and Xi’an Museum; this page covers the main building’s galleries and departure plan.
Plan around the booked session. The museum’s visitor guide lists the main building at 08:30–19:00, last ticket check 18:00 for 6 May–14 November 2026. For visits from 15 November 2026, confirm the main building’s seasonal opening time and last ticket check in the updated guide and official visit notices before planning the day. Select 本馆 / main building when checking hours or booking. The separate Qin-Han branch is listed at 08:30–18:00, last entry 17:00, with original valid-document entry without advance reservation. Legal-holiday arrangements can replace either normal window and the usual closed day: check the official visit-notice list and current booking calendar for your date. Choose a session that leaves two to three hours for your galleries. A published opening window does not itself create a booking or guarantee a late session: use the hours and session on your successful order.
Approach Xiaozhai East Road with the booked document
From a central Xi’an base, use the Metro to 小寨 / Xiaozhai on Lines 2/3 or 大雁塔 / Dayanta on Lines 3/4, then walk to 陕西历史博物馆本馆 · 小寨东路91号. The museum’s transport page places it about 778 metres from Xiaozhai and 834 metres from Dayanta. Search the full Chinese museum name and street address to avoid the outlying Qin-Han branch.
Bring the original passport and successful order to the signed admission point for your session. The visitor guide names a comprehensive service window at the south gate / 南门 for document issues. Ask that desk for the current hall map and any mobility aid before entering. The museum lists stroller and wheelchair borrowing at its service desk; ask staff about the route from your Metro exit to the desk if step-free access matters.
Follow the three-hall history, then decide whether to add more
The museum describes 陕西古代文明 as three halls and seven historical stages, from prehistory through the periods after Tang, with particular weight on Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang. Read the entrance’s open-hall board and follow current signs; display cases and loans can change.
- Hall 1 · bronze and writing: start with the signed early chronology. The museum’s collection page registers the Duo You bronze ding · 多友鼎 in this hall. Compare its deep bowl and simple decoration with the inscription described on the label or illustration: the text records a Western Zhou military campaign and rewards. This is a vessel that also preserves a written political story, not just an example of bronze shape.
- Hall 2 · read the middle units selectively: follow the current numbered sequence and choose two labelled objects to read fully. Compare their material, intended use and named maker or owner where the labels supply one: which object served public authority, ritual or everyday life? Keep that comparison as you continue, rather than treating every case as another dynasty name.
- Hall 3 · Tang music and clothing: the collection page registers the Tang sancai camel carrying musicians · 三彩载乐骆驼俑 here. Look for the seven seated players around the standing singer; compare their instruments, clothing and arrangement on the camel’s platform. The museum uses the group to discuss music and cultural exchange in Tang Chang’an. Finish the signed chronology, then rest before another exhibition.
Placement boundary: those hall numbers are the museum’s online collection registrations, not a live case-location guarantee. Read today’s entrance board and exhibit labels. If a named object is on loan or off display, keep the open unit and use another labelled object for the same comparison instead of chasing it into another building. The Empress’s jade seal is registered at the separate Qin-Han branch; choose that building and its return route if the seal is the reason for your visit.
For a shorter visit, keep the three-hall progression, make the two named objects your longer stops when displayed, skim the remaining open units and cut the extra exhibition. Allow two to three hours for entry, reading and rests; this is an editorial budget, not a promised completion time.
Separate the basic order from paid and changing exhibitions
大唐遗宝——何家村窖藏出土文物展 is the museum’s Hejiacun treasure display in Hall 4. Its Tang gold and silver objects give a narrower view of material culture than the main chronology. The museum lists it under special exhibitions; read that list and your ticket’s permitted areas before joining its queue.
唐代壁画珍品展 has a separate ticket under the museum’s visitor guide. Buy its current product through the official entry if murals warrant another time block, then follow the entrance map to that exhibition. Use the notice list for changes and temporary exhibitions.
Leave toward Dayanta or return to the hotel
For a southern-city combination, leave the main building and continue toward the 大雁塔 / Dayanta area after a meal and rest. The museum’s own transport information identifies Dayanta Station on Lines 3/4; the pagoda square, temple and tower are different choices with separate access. The city guide explains which of them to keep. If the museum session is late, finish here and return from Xiaozhai or Dayanta instead of hurrying into another closing venue.
Without a successful main-building order, choose the Wall and old streets or reserve another museum under its own rule. A Qin-Han branch visit uses its own address and entry rule. For a document mismatch or lost order, use the museum’s south-gate service window or call 029-85253806 during working hours; staff determine whether entry can be recovered.
Sources and date boundary
Reservation details retain their earlier September 2026 checks. The museum’s current visitor guide supplies venue identity, address, Metro proximity, the opening-time table expressly labelled 6 May–14 November 2026 and its holiday-notice caveat, passport document list, five-day 17:00 release, successful-order requirement and service desk. The opening-time range was rechecked on 2 October 2026 and ends on 14 November 2026. For visits from 15 November 2026, use the updated main-building opening-time table and official notice list for seasonal hours, last ticket check and closed days. The notice list also carries holiday and temporary arrangements. The basic-exhibition description supplies the three-hall, seven-stage scope. Gallery sequence and two-to-three-hour budget are editorial. Use the issued order for admission and ask the south-gate service desk about any required access route.
Basic-display scope and collection descriptions checked 1 October 2026 against the museum’s basic exhibition, Duo You ding and musicians’ camel pages. The Empress’s seal record identifies the Qin-Han branch. The visitor-guide links use the maintained full guide URL; this link and gallery check does not refresh every opening or reservation rule. Object comparisons, selection and the time allowance are editorial; actual display availability remains untested.
