XI’AN · CALLIGRAPHY AND STONE

Xi’an Beilin Museum 西安碑林博物馆

Beilin has two useful scales: the old Confucian court and stele rooms, then a large north building of themed galleries. If brushwork, carved texts and stone sculpture interest you, see the old core first; add the north galleries when you can give the museum a longer city block.

Hours source checked 30 September 2026: The museum’s normal-hours announcement reproduced by district media gives 09:00–18:30, with ticket sales stopping at 17:00; it does not independently establish the last ticket-check time. Holiday hours can replace the usual window. Check the official visit-date ticket entry and museum website, or call 029-87253331 before travel. The posted full ticket is CNY 85; check the actual order and foreign-passport purchase route before fixing the visit.

01
DECIDE IF THIS IS YOUR CITY STOP

Choose inscriptions and stone sculpture

SHORT ANSWER

Spend about 90 minutes on the Confucian court, one or two old stele rooms and a stone-sculpture stop if you are pairing Beilin with 书院门 / Shuyuanmen and the Wall. Allow two to three hours when the north building’s five themes are the reason for the visit. These are editorial planning allowances; gallery access follows the day’s signs.

Beilin’s old courtyards preserve the character of a place where inscriptions have been kept and studied for centuries. The north building, opened in May 2025, groups more material by subject. That makes this a different choice from Shaanxi History Museum, whose basic display gives a chronological regional history. The Xi’an city guide compares both museums with an old-city Wall day.

02
CHOOSE YOUR VISIT

Use the visit-date notice and buy a timed ticket

The museum’s normal-hours announcement reproduced by district media gives 09:00–18:30, with 17:00 as the ticket-sales cutoff. It does not separately prove a 17:00 ticket-check cutoff. Holiday hours and sales windows can differ; check the actual-date booking period and museum’s official website, or call 029-87253331. Open the museum’s online ticket entry, linked from its official website, or use its official WeChat or Alipay channel. Reserve a timed ticket up to five days ahead; choose the actual date and period, complete payment and keep the issued order or QR code.

The museum’s 6 May 2025 fare notice sets a CNY 85 full ticket and CNY 42 half ticket from 12 May 2025 for two years. The fare notice limits its listed concessions to PRC citizens. If you are visiting on a non-PRC passport, budget for the CNY 85 full ticket and confirm any exception and your purchase path with the museum. Check the actual-date order and ask 029-87253331 if the checkout or passport field is unclear. Internal guiding is a separate service.

Do not use the old homepage pop-up as today’s tariff:

on 30 September 2026 the museum homepage still displayed a notice dated 11 April 2025 with CNY 10 and 09:00–18:00. Use the later museum fare notice, the normal-hours announcement reproduced by district media, and the amount and period on your actual-date official order.

Passport boundary:

the museum’s 7 January 2025 annual report says non-mainland visitors could reserve and validate tickets with passports in 2024. The readable current reservation notice describes mainland ID and QR entry; it contains no demonstrated foreign-passport checkout for 2026. If the official form rejects your document or payment, contact the museum at 029-87253331 before making Beilin the fixed visit. Ask whether a staffed desk can issue your date and how your original passport and order are validated. An issued official order is the admission evidence.

03
THE CORRECT STREET ENTRANCE

Approach from Shuyuanmen or Bell Tower

South / old-city approach:

enter 西安碑林博物馆 · 三学街15号 from the Shuyuanmen side. The museum’s access notice names 永宁门 / Yongningmen Metro Line 2, Exit D2, with about 795 metres of walking. This is the natural choice after or before the Calligraphy Street and the Wall’s south side.

North / Bell Tower approach:

the operator also lists 西安碑林博物馆北门 · 东木头市44号. Its route starts at 钟楼 / Bell Tower on Metro Lines 2/6, Exit F, and lists about 504 metres on foot. Use the gate named on your issued ticket and follow the museum’s current signs once inside. Both addresses enter one museum campus.

04
THE SHORT CORE

Read the courtyard, then a few stones closely

  1. 孔庙古建筑群 / Confucian court: move through the pavilions, pool and gates to understand the scholarly setting that the old stele collection inhabits. Its buildings are part of the museum visit.
  2. 碑林第一至七室 / old stele rooms: choose two or three inscriptions and compare script, scale and purpose. The operator specifically identifies the 唐开成石经 / Tang Stone Classics among the historic rooms; this is a useful anchor for seeing text made durable in stone.
  3. 石刻艺术室 or 石刻艺术馆 / stone sculpture: if time remains, choose either Han and Tang carved forms in the art room or Buddhist figures in the art museum. The latter is organised around 众生祈愿 and 宝相千颜; the day’s gallery signs control access.

Keep this route when you want an old-city afternoon with Shuyuanmen and a Wall section. Ask for the current site map at the entrance; the operator lists rest areas, water and wheelchair borrowing. If step-free access is needed, ask staff for a suitable route through the old courtyards and new galleries.

05
IF YOU WANT DEPTH

Add one or two north-gallery themes

The district’s 2025 museum tour identifies five north-building exhibitions that answer different questions. 星耀长安 concentrates on notable inscriptions; 汉字·书法·碑林 follows writing and the museum’s history; 骧腾百世 gives the Zhaoling Six Steeds their own context. 贞珉千年 uses Yu Youren and tomb epitaphs to tell a collecting story; 丝路石语 reads medieval inscriptions against Silk Road exchange. The 2025 tour supports these subjects and places the north building on the same campus; use the day’s signs for open galleries.

For a first visit, choose 汉字·书法·碑林 to make the old rooms more legible, then 骧腾百世 if carved figures interest you. Swap the second for 丝路石语 if you want trade and cross-cultural evidence. This editorial selection is flexible; gallery access and temporary displays follow the day’s signs.

06
COMPLETE THE OLD-CITY WALK

Leave the museum with a real next stop

After the old core, walk along 书院门 / Shuyuanmen to see brushes, paper and printed rubbings in the shopfronts. A shop rubbing is a reproduction; ask what a shop is actually selling. If you still have energy and an operating gate, continue toward 永宁门 / Yongning Gate for one Wall section. The city guide sets out the Wall ticket, entrance and shorter alternative. If the museum took longer than expected, keep the street walk and drop the Wall climb.

If no valid ticket or passport purchase route is available, do Shuyuanmen as a public street walk and decide separately whether the Wall gate is operating. If the gallery you wanted is closed, the old stele rooms remain the default; if old rooms are restricted, use one open north theme rather than claiming the entire museum has shut. For document or access questions, use the museum’s 029-87253331 visitor line.

07
EVIDENCE

Sources and open transaction question

Normal and September-extension notices retain their 27 September 2026 check. The current booking channel and a newer dated operator notice control any holiday exception. The separate museum fare notice dated 6 May 2025 sets those amounts from 12 May 2025 for two years. The district media reproduction of the museum’s normal-hours and access announcement gives 09:00–18:30, a 17:00 ticket-sales cutoff, both Chinese gate addresses and Metro exits; it does not by itself establish the last ticket-check time. The previously checked September extension is historical and supplies no current visit window. The district museum tour identifies old rooms and five north themes; the day’s signs govern exact gallery access. The 2025 annual report supports historical passport ticketing, while the homepage’s older pop-up conflicts with the later hours and fare notices. The official homepage’s link to the online ticket entry was checked on 1 October 2026; the ticket form and payment were not tested. None of these pages demonstrates a successful 2026 non-PRC passport checkout. Confirm that path, your order amount and any newer dated change before travel.
