South loop or West-to-South?
Use South Gate (南大门) for a first panda morning when you want to keep transfers and walking contained. Return to South Gate after the historic southern viewing areas. Use West Gate (西大门) when the creek-and-forest side interests you and you can allow more time for a one-way traverse to South Gate. Match the return transport and any stored bag to the gate where you finish.
A focused first visit
Line 3 to Panda Avenue, 408 to South Gate. Use the official map to select the villas and Sun Nursery area that are open, stay to watch behaviour, then walk back to South Gate. Allow roughly three hours inside as a planning target, adding queue and rest time.
More habitat zones, more moving parts
Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, 409 to West Gate. Start near Panda Creek Valley, choose Star Nursery or Panda Tower, and use the paid internal bus toward the southern stops. Leave from South Gate and use its own city return. Budget a longer half-day inside.
Keep the exit with you
A shorter western visit can stay around the creek and forest areas, then return to West Gate. Use this when the creek-and-forest side is your priority or when you must recover a borrowed stroller or stored bag at West Gate. Confirm the 409 return before entering.

Why the gate choice matters: the official bus runs different directional stop sequences. A bus ticket allows boarding at stops, but getting off for pandas means joining the next boarding queue. At a South or West terminal, another ride requires a new queue and ticket check. The park bus is neither the public 408 nor the public 409. Holiday and temporary gate arrangements are on the Base’s official notice list; match any changed gate to its own return transport.

Secure the right visit and document
Book Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地). Panda Valley in Dujiangyan is a separate attraction. The Base’s official ticket guide lists the authorised booking channels and passport rules. It sells dated morning and afternoon entry through its official WeChat account or mini program and its listed authorised platforms, including Trip.com/Ctrip. Tickets can be reserved up to 14 days ahead and stop selling when the daily allocation is gone. A standard adult ticket is CNY 55; the internal sightseeing bus is a separate CNY 30 ticket. Check the current checkout for your date and gate notice before paying.
From March through October, morning entry is 07:30–12:00 and afternoon entry 12:00–17:00; clearing starts at 18:00. From November through February, morning entry is 08:00–12:00 and afternoon entry 12:00–16:30; clearing starts at 17:30. A morning slot leaves more time for either route below. The entry windows also allow afternoon arrivals, whose remaining visiting time may be too short for a full crossing. The official table currently lists free, no-reservation entry for visitors aged 60 or over and children aged six or younger or under 1.3 m; check the document conditions for each person in the current booking flow.
Enter the same name and document number as the original passport you will bring. At the gate, follow the signed identity-document lane or ask staff for the passport check. The operator’s English and Chinese descriptions differ in how they name the lane, but both require a matching real-name booking. Save the booking confirmation offline. If online payment fails, the operator describes staffed-window sales only while tickets remain, so keep a city-day fallback. Its ticket page warns against paid fast-entry claims.
Before leaving, save the official map and select both your entrance and exit in your map app. Check for a dated closure or weather notice. Pack drinking water, a light layer or rain protection, and shoes suitable for paths and queues. Leave large luggage at your hotel when possible. The Base lists free storage at both gate visitor centres, but retrieving an item means returning to that gate; a cross-park exit then stops making sense.
South Gate: a morning you can actually finish
- Hotel to the right gate. Reach Metro Line 3 from your hotel and ride to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道). Leave at Exit A and follow the signed connection to bus 408 for South Gate. The gate is a bus ride beyond the Metro station. The operator also lists Zoo station with buses 655 or 87 as an alternative. From Chunxi Road, the Base’s own taxi reference is about CNY 40 and 25–35 minutes to the Base under ordinary traffic; state 南大门 to the driver and check the actual quote.
- At the entrance. Complete the passport check, then open the current park map. Notice the South Gate bus departure point even if you decide to walk. Start with a southern panda villa area that is open, then choose the Sun Giant Panda Nursery House (大熊猫太阳产房) area if its viewing access is open. Nursery viewing depends on which animals are on display that day. Sit or pause long enough to see feeding, climbing or rest at one enclosure rather than racing between every sign.
- Keep the turn-back simple. If the route and energy allow, add another nearby open villa or the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum before turning toward South Gate. The museum adds a conservation and breeding explanation when animals are indoors or the weather is poor. It is optional and subject to its day’s opening; allow the full return journey before adding it.
- Back to the city. Follow the signed path back to South Gate, then check the 408 stop and its current service toward Panda Avenue Metro. Reverse Line 3 to the station that fits your hotel. If the 408 is not running or the queue is excessive, use the signed legal taxi or ride-hail pickup and give the driver your hotel’s Chinese name or Panda Avenue station as the destination.
This route deliberately leaves the western creek zone out. It is enough for a first visit when the point is time spent watching pandas rather than completing a map. The South-to-West internal bus can reduce travel to the villas or Sun Nursery, but identify the separate West-to-South return stop on the live map before boarding outbound. The outbound bus continues through the centre toward West Gate. A long internal-bus queue can erase any walking saved.
West to South: choose a few stops
- Outward:
use Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital (军区总医院), leave at Exit B and board 409 for West Gate. The Base lists that shuttle at about ten minutes from the station, but gives no live wait or dated last service on its transport page. If using a car, give the driver 西大门 and agree where you will be collected only if you intend to finish there. The Base directs self-drivers to an off-site car park and transfer, rather than parking at the West Gate.
- First viewing choice:
from West Gate, follow the current map toward Panda Creek Valley (熊猫溪谷). The Base’s own western-area guide describes several panda houses there. Pick one or two open viewing spots and spend your time at those selected places. The next useful stop is Star Giant Panda Nursery House (大熊猫星星产房) in the forest side. The Panda Art Museum is an optional addition but normally closes on Mondays; Bamboo Tower can close in bad weather. Neither is required to see pandas.
- Cross the park:
the official West-to-South sightseeing bus runs in this order: West Gate → Panda Creek Valley → Star Nursery → Bamboo Tower → No. 1 Panda Villa → Sun Nursery → Swan Lake → South Gate. Pay for the bus if it saves a meaningful walk for your group, then choose two or three places to get off. Creek Valley, one nursery or villa, and a rest near Swan Lake make a feasible long visit. Every reboarding is subject to the queue; boarding at a gate terminal for another leg requires re-queueing and ticket verification. If the next bus queue is too long, cut the extra stop and move toward the exit shown on the live map.
- Food and exit:
the operator lists Panda Station near Star Nursery for a rest or food, and restaurants near Swan Lake in the southern area. Check their actual opening and prices when you arrive. Finish at South Gate and use 408 toward Panda Avenue and Line 3, or a legal gate pickup. West Gate storage and equipment loans require a West Gate finish. If you decide to finish early at West instead, use the West Gate’s signed 409 return toward Junqu General Hospital and confirm its last service before committing to the loop.
Let the animals, heat and your group set the pace
Look for behaviour rather than a particular panda. An animal may be outside with bamboo, high on a structure, resting in shade or in an indoor area. The Base says it may move pandas indoors during heat and may close zones for animal care, maintenance or weather. It lists indoor-viewing areas in Villas 1, 2, 3 and 7, the Sun, Moon and Star nursery houses, and parts of the reception, forest and creek areas. Ask staff which of those are open that day before walking across the campus for an expected outdoor sighting. The Base’s No. 6 Villa normally closes on Mondays, except statutory holidays, as part of an animal-rest trial.
Keep your voice low and flash switched off. Stay behind the barriers and keep food out of the enclosures. Give the viewing edge to those already waiting and move on when a place becomes crowded. Families should choose fewer stops, a real snack and toilet break, and one adult to keep the exit and return route. The gate visitor centres list free water points, storage and loans of strollers, wheelchairs and walking sticks; ask staff about availability and return terms. Ask staff about step-free access on the paths, boarding points and exhibits you intend to use, separately from borrowing an aid. The existing folding-chair and wheelchair case covers a limited traveller problem.
A hot or rainy day is a reason to keep the route shorter, use open indoor viewing if available and skip a slippery or steep detour. The Chengdu city guide pairs a panda morning with lunch, tea or a modest central afternoon. After a long Base visit, keep the rest of the day light; give Sanxingdui and Leshan their own days.
Know which decision to undo
Resolve the slot before travelling
A dated ticket is valid for its reserved morning or afternoon window. If you miss that window, contact the original booking channel or the Base’s ticket desk before assuming you can enter later. Keep the city-day fallback until the entry is resolved; use the original channel for any refund request.
Keep a Chengdu day
Try another date or an authorised channel listed by the Base. The staffed window is conditional on remaining stock. Until you have issued admission from an authorised channel, keep a central city plan.
Stay on one side
Choose open Creek Valley and forest-side houses, then finish at West Gate for 409 or a legal pickup when the internal bus is impractical.
Ask for the open viewing area
The visitor notice names heat, animal care, maintenance and weather as reasons. Use the live map and staff directions for an open indoor house or the museum; a specific animal or cub cannot be guaranteed.
Use the gate pickup
At the exit you actually reach, check the current public-bus stop and last service. If it has ended, use the signed legal taxi or ride-hail pickup to your hotel or a Line 3 station, with the destination saved in Chinese.
Before an urgent departure: allow time for the park exit, road pickup, traffic and station or airport procedures when fitting the visit before a same-day train or flight. Cut an optional panda stop to protect that margin. The Base’s visitor hotline is 028-83510033.
Sources and live notices
The Base’s ticket, transport, sightseeing-bus and visitor information was checked on 29 September 2026. Use the official notice list for temporary gate or viewing changes and the live park map for open enclosures. Match the exit to the return shuttle and any stored bag or borrowed equipment. The ticket page was reopened on 2 October to confirm that admission is tied to the reserved morning or afternoon window; it supports the missed-slot recovery above. Route lengths and visit order are editorial planning allowances.
